CERTIFICATE of RECOGNITION

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution in the Governor of the
Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

THEORETICAL AND APPLIED MECHANICS DAY

WHEREAS, Virginia Tech is a leader in theoretical and applied mechanics among colleges and universities nationwide; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics has awarded nearly 500 Ph.D. candidates since it became eligible to award a doctorate in 1954; and

WHEREAS, theoretical and applied mechanical research done by students and professors at Virginia Tech and by graduates of the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics has resulted in significant developments benefiting health care, public safety, transportation, manufacturing and construction; and

WHEREAS, from June 23 to June 28, 2002, Virginia Tech will host the 14th U.S. National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics; and

WHEREAS, this Congress is sponsored by the United States National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, and will involve nearly one thousand students, professionals and leaders in the field of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and participants from around the world;

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mark R. Warner, do hereby recognize June 24, 2002, as THEORETICAL AND APPLIED MECHANICS DAY in the COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
